Body
of Water was designed for
the graveyard of the Circular Congregational Church in Charleston,
SC, for the traveling exhibition, Thresholds: Expressions of
Art and Spirituality, curated by Eleanor Heartney. It is a cast
iron representation
of
the weatherworn, cradle-style grave markers that are common
in Charleston. My sculpture houses rows of glass jugs that contain
ten gallons of water, which is equivalent to the sixty percent
of water that makes up an adult body. This basic, fact compels
the viewer to consider the boundary between matter and
spirit, as it demonstrates the insignificance and wonder of
life.
